I sorta disagree. Like, why do we even need it?
Sure it made sense 50 years ago when an apple cost 35 cents, but when’s the last time you bought something less than a dollar?

it’s hard to make something much cheaper than the penny already is, without compromising durability

This is true, but it basically acts as auto-inflation we now have to round up cash purchases to 5¢. Although 1-3¢ doesn't sound like a huge loss, assuming you make roughly 3 purchases a day you have $15ish or more dollars leaving your pocket per year for no reason
