I mean it was a bourgeois revolution, just like those in the USA and Spanish America. The point initially was not to be against the wealthy, it was that the wealthy new class of merchants, lawyers, and businessmen wanted to give rid of the old privileges of the aristocracy

The poor people of France were essentially just pawns that were easy to rile up and use for political gain, or later as an army. The liberal revolutions of the enlightenment period are fundamentally different than those of later socialist movements.

You should look up François-Noël Babeuf. Interesting figure from the French revolution period. Kind of a pseudo-communist. He was executed for attempting to overthrow the revolutionary government.
