I think Greek life absolutely needs to be reformed but acting like it should be banned entirely (or that fraternities specifically should be banned) denies a lot more than any potential risks it avoids, it’s like demolishing an entire field because you found weeds in one corner

greek life on paper is fine. frats do, in fact, do a lot of good charity work. all of this charity, however, doesn’t overshadow the other terrible shit frat bros do. cleaning up a highway doesn’t make you any less of a rapist.

The weeds analogy assumes the field is healthy. It isn't. Greek life is a petri dish for patriarchal capitalism: gender binaries, legacy wealth, and stacked privilege keeping the status quo intact. Banning frats won't fix that, and neither will reform that keeps the structure. The culture needs replacing. I can have compassion for guys shaped by it and still hold them responsible. Broken and accountable aren't opposites. Fusing outrage with argument just muddies both.

I had a few friends freshman year who rushed and joined. Had to cut them all off. The way they talked, behaved, and presented themselves became so uncomfortable.
