Since the man or bear thing only really worked for women, I've made one for conservative men. In the middle of the woods, would you rather be with a black person or a bear?

Maybe the black person can help scare off bears

That black gentleman and I are going to split some salmon then. Polar bears are not to be fucked with. A black bear is a cool sighting though if you get the chance! Rarely do they attack.

Fun fact black bears are much more likely to attack predatorily than brown bears

I don’t believe that is true. Brown bears are 4x more likely to attack. There are more black bear attacks annually though because there are much more encounters.

Predatory brown bear attacks take up 2-5% of total brown bear attacks, predatory black bear attacks take up 15% of total black bear attacks.

Brown bears are just more aggressive and stronger, and as a product more likely to kill you in a defensive or neutral encounter than the comparatively timid and weak black bear

However if a black bear does attack you, its a whole lot more likely to be predatory in nature (as in the bear has been stalking you for food) than if a brown bear were to attack you (which is more likely to occur with you guys stumbling across each other by accident and the bear reacting with aggression whether that be because you are near a food cache or its cubs, territoriality from mating season, etc)

Ahh I see. I was not segmenting predatory vs defensive attacks. That’s very interesting. Thanks for the correction! I will say for our case, a random encounter in the woods is likely to trigger defensive posturing just as much predatory behavior.

That's interesting, I suppose I always saw it as "being in the woods for an extended period of time with ______" and with the bear that naturally evolved towards it stalking me in my mind 😂

Probably because I can't think of any other scenario where I have been even in the vicinity of a bear in the woods for longer than maybe 10-15 seconds

Yeah, the whole debate is rather stupid because all of these details matter. Are you lost or on a trail? Are you being followed or is it just a path crossing? It’s very sad to me that the argument has actually caused damage to gender dynamics…
