I did not say it was a liberal value. I said that historically speaking they aren’t particularly contradictory. Settler colonial states tend to pursue highly egalitarian ideologies for the colonizers. Think about where liberalism developed. England, the United States, France, Latin America.
Even democratic socialism gained heavy support within settler colonial societies like South Africa, Australia, and indeed Israel. They simply pursue egalitarianism for the settler group. Liberalism is even used to justify colonialism, by saying “look at the progress we are bringing to replace savagery.”
#1 makes a reasonable point that I think is worth accepting to some extent, but it’s a bit of a sweeping one and lacks nuance and somewhat reductive about the hypocrisy. Liberalism created the abolitionist movements that freed a lot of the colonies as well as created civil rights languages that exist within a lot of the constitutions of those countries. We did betray those countries during the colonization years though 🤷♂️
I view liberalism as having been a great social good. And I myself am a democratic socialist, even as I recognize the colonial history of my ideology. I just think it’s important to see what the flaws in our ideologies are so that we can better address them. It’s not productive to say “my ideology doesn’t allow x” as it leaves a blind spot if that is actually the case.
