We really never got out of the colonial mindset and I guess this shows that. In 8 years we went from universally agreeing Nazis were bad to half the government supporting Nazi-esque expansionist ideology. I guess look to Puerto Rico, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Northern Marina islands, and American Samoa as to how we got used to waning to conquer while refusing full rights.
