Ok Hochul, in your mind the “let’s make a law making it illegal to 3D print guns” sounds good, but there’s a few issues. 1). How do you propose that works? The lines of code don’t understand it’s making a gun. 2). 3D printing a gun is already illegal…

the purpose of laws like that is to make it illegal so people think twice, but also idk what the new york laws already are

…what makes you think making it a law than bans “gun making software” is suddenly gonna make people stop? Just cuz you can make a gun in SolidWorks and Mastercam, are you gonna ban that software in the state of NY? Are you just gonna leave the engineers and CAD drafters out to dry?

It’s a way to charge people who use them for harm more severely and go after people selling them on the black market. This is like saying “oh we’re gonna make shooting people illegal, well then gun doesn’t know it’s shooting a person so how does that work?”

It’s most likely to increase the existing penalty and thus increase deterrence

People who are going to the trouble of 3D printing a gun are doing it so it’s not traceable, the legality of it doesn’t apply to them

That explanation makes sense for the penalty side of it, it’s just how she said it. She was proud of herself when she said, like this was the best idea ever. But it’s just an idea, you can’t put it into practice

I mean you can put it into practice, there’s already been people sentenced for this exact thing. I don’t know what makes you think laws always just enforce themselves, people do all kinds of illegal shit all the time without getting caught. Like what happens if police get tipped off about someone, search their house, and find a 3D printer and printed gun parts? That’s how a lot of criminal investigations work
