Why is it inherently patriarchal? What if the woman literally prefers doing more domestic duties while the man works? Not that it’s super realistic in this economy

Because more often than not that “preference” is the result of patriarchal conditioning. Individuals can certainly choose to live their lives this way, but let’s be honest about where these choices come from.

it’s still patriarchal? preference is not a determining factor in whether something is patriarchal or not, how similar it is to historical practices within the patriarchy is. the idea that “women perform the household duties while men are the earners” is inherently rooted in patriarchy whether you acknowledge it or not. just because some people have repackaged that historical power dynamic into some social media trend does not reduce the inherently oppressive nature within it.

it primarily refers to the sociopolitical system in which law and culture is oriented around establishing and reinforcing systemic power for men, primarily. i recommend diving down the rabbit hole and researching the topic, it’s really interesting and shines a light onto our world quite a bit as well! it’s basically a system of control in which men hold most of the power within the family and society. in other words, a “male-dominated society”

I’m not sure to be honest with you, if I’m not mistaken there was no singular “triggering point” that marks its origin. I recommend taking some time out to look into the history of the term as well as the hypotheses about its origins; I know it has ties as far back as 4000 BCE. In Marxist theory, Engels actually tries to ascribe the origin of the patriarchy itself to the creation of private property, as private property was heavily limited in inheritance to only pass down to male heirs; but

this is by no means the “origin” of patriarchy, especially not widely accepted. I do think it’s a good topic of discussion though, as private property plays a large role in this convo.
