Fascism is differentiated by hypernationalism, which is what MAGA positions itself around. “Protecting the homeland,” being “patriots,” “true Americans,” etc. even calling themselves “native Americans”

Fascism also is anti-individualism, positing the nation as something tantamount to the spiritual collective of a people, fundamentally anti-conservative and anti-capitalist, and economically a “third way” ideology. Aspects severely lacking in Trump’s regime. I’m not saying Trump isn’t at least authoritarian, but I am saying his leadership style is not fascist in the way actual fascists describe their own ideology. It’s like calling Mamdani a Communist when actual Communists reject that

Except Trump’s regime is fundamentally not conservative in any policy, and continually pits MAGA against “enemies” of the nation (from illegal immigrants to so-called communists). Their enemies are both infinitely strong and pathetically weak. You’re right in that the comparison isn’t exact, but it’s close enough to warrant the label

I don’t think the aspects of fascism that don’t apply to Trump are anything to brush off however. Again, the bulk of not only people’s complaints about Trump and the argument that Trump is a fascist are almost all aspects of fascism that is shared with just plain authoritarianism. Pitting out groups as enemies, silencing dissent etc, can equally be applied to Mussolini’s Italy as it is to Stalin’s Russia or Mao’s China. Does that make most communist governments fascist? Well, in theory it’s actually not. Fascism, especially in a certain person’s speeches, strongly prized contributions of the individual to the state, making them the patriots. For example, a mother who gave birth to more sons would get a medal from Germany, there were Bronze, Silver, and Gold badges given out for more and more children. Another example would be the commemoration of laborers in Fascist Germany, who were celebrated for helping the war effort. Fascism makes you THINK it’s supporting

I’d say Trump is a quasi-neofascist. He definitely portrays a handful of characteristics of previous fascist leaders but he also has to adapt that playbook to fit the American system, so really it can’t be identical because the situations were rather different and the nations were different as well.
