killing abortion providers: “defense of a fetus with deadly force” anti-abortion protesters assaulting people at abortion clinics: “just practicing religious freedom” yeah they want you to think you’re overreacting but they want to normalize violence against abortion providers, seekers, and advocates, and then pretend like there’s a normal middle ground between protecting the rights of women and wanted them to be jailed for seeking an abortion
Realistically I think this would be legalizing abortion clinic bombings. I mean I BET if this law is passed then somebody is going to commit murder and try to use “she was going to get an abortion” as a defense, but I doubt it would work. Not defending the law though, there’d still be a murder that happened because it got passed
Or like if you know somebody is a doctor who’s qualified to do abortions, then you could kill them and claim you did it to stop abortions from happening. Or if you know somebody’s driving out of state to get an abortion then you could destroy their car. Theoretically if somebody works at an abortion clinic in any capacity you could get away will killing then
That isn’t the point. The scenario is one that would be plausibly legal if the bill passed. I also don’t think anybody will avoid a murder sentence there, but l somebody is going to try. Especially now that there’s headlines up saying “you can kill a pregnant woman and say she was going to get an abortion,” some people will think “I can kill a pregnant woman and I’ll get away with it if I say she was going to get an abortion.”
I think it’s almost universally agreed upon that this bill is ass. But you think literally any piece of law that gets the fear mongering treatment should just have to roll over because now a headline exists of a made up scenario that scares people? >“DEI Causing White Unemployment” > Whelp guys, pack it up, now the employers are gonna think it’s possible which means someone’s gonna try it
It’s a bad bill on its own and the fear mongering isn’t totally baseless. It isn’t a definitive “this law does not legalize killing pregnant woman” until somebody tries to argue in court that it does and loses. I mean that it’s a legit interpretation of what the law means even if I don’t expect it to be held up as correct.
But that’s what Supreme Court deliberations are for. You should not want Ms. Twitterbot to be your new legal analyst. It’s a crap bill written like shit from a butt. It’s never gonna pass. Not even 80% of pro life republicans would sign off on this. The literal cosponsor took his name off of it. This is just pure fearmongering when it’s insignificant. Bills just as ridiculous as these get proposed every day and struck down. We should not want our media fearmongering
I referred you to the video because of the legal process surrounding the bill. The bill is highly unlikely to be passed because it’s so vague, some NC Republicans do not support it, and it essentially gives a fetus the same rights as a person. There is a lot of grey area in this bill. It’s great that there is backlash on this bill throughout social media, but it’s likely to never go into law, so don’t let it freak you out too much.
