Call me a tree hugger, but if a candidate doesn’t believe climate change is a threat and that we need to move as quickly as possible to renewables, they’re not getting my vote.

so much of the American public is unaware about how utterly fucked we are regarding anthropogenic climate change. If I remember correctly, even if we fully stopped all co2 emissions today, we still breach the 1.5C ceiling which causes mass displacement long term, as well as kills off a majority of the coral reef population. we’re currently on track for 2.0 by the 2050s I think too :/

Oh yeah we need to do a total 180° turnaround if we are to still have an inhabitable planet in the future. We are already doomed to have a lot go wrong due to the damage that has already been caused, let’s not make it worse

I just had a conversation about this today! I agree! And I’ll say, if the Green Party actually had a shot ngl I’d vote for them🫣

From an optimist perspective I think we were on track for 3.0C and seem to have avoided that, but I totally agree. Super sad 😔

So how you feel about nuclear…?

it’s mostly used as a wedge to prevent the implementation of renewable energy. nuclear is a transition source, not a permanent one (that is unless we solve the issue of stable fusion). Nuclear should be used to solely supplement energy grids as renewable energy sources are further developed, but the majority of energy grids need to be transitioned to primarily renewable energy sources that don’t rely on extractive resources aside from the initial set up.

the thing ab nuclear is it allows for profit to still be extracted from energy, which is partially why there’s such a large push for it over renewable energy.

it’s good to know that we avoided 3.0, but fuck it’s terrifying that we were even on track to reach that high. one day things will change…

Seriously? Nuclear energy is generally less harmful to the environment than “renewables,” not to mention more reliable.

I know you’re talking to 1 but ngl this is the one topic I’m on the fence on. Whether nuclear is or isn’t more sustainable seems to depend on what we’re considering “sustainable” is
