It’s that the big leaders of the “New Atheist” movement of the Late 2000s/Early 2010s were cringelords, who also very clearly hated Muslims, and they had a lot of influence on the Left of their era, but then they became “Reddit” so the left went in the “we don’t dislike ALL religion, just the one that currently oppresses us” which I think is a stupid instinct.

Yeah if you criticize Christianity but not Islam you make no sense

I think it boils down to 1. anger at the evangelical Christian right for the shit that’s happening rn. 2. They often very aggressively target Muslim populations or individual (like Mamdani for example) based on their religion. That garners sympathy for Muslims. 3. most people associate religion in America with Christianity since it’s the most common religion and Christianity is associated with evangelical Christians which people (reasonably) hate.

Islam is worthy of every single critique I have of Christianity, and I don’t deny that. I also don’t use that as justification for the oppression of Muslim peoples. And I do talk about/criticize Christianity more often, but only because that’s the type of fanaticism I have real life experience with. ALL religion is the opiate of the masses though.
