I’m gonna push back here a little. Theology is a multidisciplinary field. It does push for learning philosophy, political science, history, literature, law, and linguistics for that matter. It’s an incredibly broad synthesis of professional academic work. You have to really know your work to get a thesis in theology.
The use of a master’s in theology typically means either professorship or you have your master’s for attaining higher clerical positions. Bishops and cardinals have master’s degrees in divinity but a number also have master’s in natural sciences. The late Pope Francis had a strong academic background in chemistry, if I remember correctly.
