Hot take: the more I learn about youth sports, the more I hate them. High school baseball is giving my brother body dysmorphia because he thinks he absolutely has to pitch 90 at 15. Middle schoolers are posting HS football commits. Bats are $400.

The turning of youth school sports from like a fun game to a hyper-competitive life choice is depressing

My brother could throw 91 and they overplayed the hell out of him. He’s had surgery on his UCL and ACL(yes from pitching). They threaten to cut him when he wouldn’t pitch until his shoulder was healed and he quit. The pressure from coaches and parents is disgusting and it burns alot of kids out if it doesn’t break them

It’s getting so competitive. And for what?

Don’t forget wrestling coaches forcing kids to cut weight, giving some of them eating disorders

HS commits must be a private school thing though

My brother was telling me about a varsity senior in his school who was out for Tommy John. No 17-year old should be having Tommy John surgery, it’s completely insane.

I think the one of the worst parts about it is the strain it’s putting on parents as well. These teams/leagues expect parents to pay for out of state trips, 3 different pairs of cleats, 12 pairs of pants, and then to put their own lives on hold to ferry the kid to all of these events, and god forbid they miss a practice because the coach is going to treat it like the end of the world.

It’s ridiculous, and it’s incredibly common
