Did you ever listen to why he thought it was a mistake? Or did you just assume the only reason you could be against one of the largest expansions of federal power in American history is because of racism? Let’s not forget that the civil rights act is the law that allows peaceful protesters to be arrested on college campuses.
Giving black people equal rights is good. It’s good that we passed a civil rights act, but the specific civil rights act that we passed also massively expanded federal power at no benefit to people of color. Title VI absolutely leads to the arrest of peaceful protestors. I agree, its a violation of the first amendment and unconstitutional.
It mandates that schools that receive federal funding must stop any speech that creates a “hostile environment”. In theory that sounds great, in practice that leads to trespassing charges for free Palestine protestors because a few zionists say that peaceful anti-Israel speech makes them feel unsafe
Ultimately that depends on the university and who’s running the DOJ. Charlie Kirk has been to my uni (they apparently shut it down because he wasn’t authorized to use an amplifier and it was causing a disturbance to classes). One club invited the founder of the proud boys to speak and the university said they couldn’t block it. The cops eventually shut it down when fighting broke out between the proud boys and counterprotesters
mmm I guess the difference here might be public vs private. Under federal law, private unis can do whatever they want (CA has a state law protecting free speech on private university campuses). Public universities (like mine) absolutely can’t suppress anything unless it turns violent or causes a disruption to the university operations. So it’s up to what type of uni you’re at, your uni’s legal counsel, and however threatening the AG wants to be over stuff like this
