I need someone to tell me in the simplest way possible why exactly we can’t use like 3% of our militaries annual budget and use it for free health care. Like do we really NEED another drone?

Trump recently proposed a $1.5T military budget, which is a huge increase on the previous record. 3% of that would be $45B. Free healthcare would cost far more than that annually, probably in the ballpark of $3-4T. Not that I’m against the idea of universal coverage, but it’s not as simple as taking a little bit from the military budget and putting it somewhere else

Our healthcare spending is already more than our military spending.

Because it wouldn’t make Raytheon shareholders any money. And the ruling class needs oil. That’s as simple as I can put it at least.

I like the healthcare system how it is. If it was free we would have too many people going in for unnecessary procedures and stuff and the people with real problems wouldn’t get treated

Like as in how much we spend as a nation on healthcare or how much the government spends

Even though a public option could decrease our net spending.

Damn I looked into it and you’re right.. that’s kinda fucked up ngl.

Which we means we should still invest in healthcare spending but #2 is correct in saying it’s not as simple as just taking money from the military.

What about the proposals about making a tax on stock trades to fund it? Like how the lottery funds schools

Oh I don’t like you one bit… A lot of those “unnecessary procedures” can be vital in finding horrific illnesses in their early stages which PREVENTS the “real problems”. Also we have something called triage for a reason. The guy who had a heart attack isn’t gonna be stuck in a waiting room because someone complained of a stomach ache first.

I don’t think so I think you should just increase the corporate and individual tax rate. I think you generally don’t want to disincentivized people from moving money around like that bc that’s generally good for the economy to move money to more productive things.

I personally don’t know much about economics nor do I know how the stock market is in any way useful but ok cool glad to hear we may be stuck in this hell.

Except that’s exactly what’s happening in counties with socialized healthcare. Healthcare in the United States isn’t even bad. Both jobs offer it with a big discount/premium.

Idk maybe you should tax unrealized gains for incredibly rich people bc it is kinda cringe how they use that strategy to avoid paying taxes.

Sure that works

Not every job offers those and even when they do they don’t cover a lot of the “real problem’s”. I’m not gonna act like other places don’t have issues but we are literally in a crisis and it shows when looking at overall health and wellness when comparing countries.

Also again the specific issue you mentioned is solved by triaging

If healthcare is free then the cost of healthcare will go down and ultimately the salaries of doctors and nurses. That’s gonna disincentivize the best of the best from going to medschool. And it’s only gonna be incompetent doctors

So for the stock market you want to invest in companies that you think will grow and be productive, bc that’s how you make money. Thats also how the economy grows companies become more productive and they’re able to make more stuff with less stuff if that makes sense. Thats my understanding but im not a big Econ guy.

That makes no sense, from what I can tell stocks aren’t investments like the company owners aren’t really getting paid the money for the stock are they?…

And even if they were wouldn’t that mean it would just be going towards the big businesses that are already successful?

But the problem with the stock market, and you kinda alluded to it when you compared it to gambling, is there’s a lot of speculation and it’s not always accurate.

That’s why you have a public option so still have competition.

Most doctors I know do their practice not just for money but they genuinely want to help people. Admittedly that is anecdotal evidence but I do know a lot of doctors. Also let me assure you capitalism does not mean competence…

My understanding is it depends if your getting new shares or if your getting the shares from the secondary market. Most stocks are from the secondary market in which case the company doesn’t get the money. But if the secondary market for the shares is doing well then the company can issue new shares if they want more money. That my understanding.

You want money to be going to successful places that’s means they’re probably doing something better than other people.

But doesn’t that encourage a more monarch like approach to business and discourage competition if everyone’s just gonna back the same horse?

Also it raises the stock price if the secondary market is doing well.

Ok so again… how does this help? Like from what I’m hearing there wouldn’t be much of a difference or change if the stock market just didn’t exist. In fact we may be better off since stuff like the Great Depression happened due to the market crash

Not that nothing can ever go wrong and I’m very skeptical of some of the things going on especially with this admin and the stock market. Historically though even though there’s booms and busts the stock market historically has always been a good investment. Thats why Trump is able to brag about the stock market bc it historically always goes up even though he’s tried his hardest to fuck with it.
