Civil Rights Movement was majority peaceful and made sure that the beatings, the fire hoses, and the attacks were met with fierce civil resistance. Disobedience only fuels *their* narrative, allowing it to escalate. Civil disobedience was encouraged by sitting at those counters, sitting in that seat (RIP Claudette Colvin), and persisting in obtaining their right to vote despite literacy tests and more. cont.

I will say that the murders of Latasha Harlins and Rodney King had valid responses, but quickly devolved into neighbor vs. neighbor that caused more harm to the community and greater cause than it did good in provoking change. It was a valid response from the pressure cooker that LAPD created there over the decades of oppression since the 60s.

I mean I’m not for making peace with this administration. I am for standing your ground, and if doing what is right causes escalation, so it was meant to be (rhetorical statement). I mentioned the civil rights movement as a good baseline of what should be done, yknow a bare, barebones minimum. But I don’t think we should mirror the civil rights movement, as it was largely unsuccessful long term; see the 1970s backsliding, rise of the Black Panthers to defend communities, and the present day.

What we have now is people just recording shit on their phones and hooting and hollering. Get in the way. Block roads. Fill the streets. Shut down cities. Make it so they have to drag you away to get to what they need to. And if they shoot, that is the choice they make in that moment between themselves, the people of this nation, and their maker.

I agree that a ton of people seemingly weren’t around during the 2020 protest and activism training sessions, learning how to avoid a kettle and how to respond to violent assaults, how to remain present, and how to make actionable and meaningful demonstrations to unite a community. that’s what i want — united communities with the people. i’m not making peace with the current administration, but im damn sure not stooping to their lows in a blow-for-blow fight. cont.

I know we are smarter than they are and we are BIGGER than they are. we have to educate one another on demonstrations and meaningful disruptions with people who are prepared to be arrested, prepared to sit in a jailhouse, and are willing to take the blows and risk their life. that’s what it was when i wasn’t disabled and i was on the streets in 2020, even standing alone for 11 hours after a graveyard shift on the day John Lewis passed away. i didn’t find out about it until i got home that day.

(i just realized the juxtaposition of using the term “graveyard shift” to describe an overnight 11pm-7am immediately preceding the death of a Honorable Congressman who fought alongside MLK Jr. so let’s just not talk about that lol 🥲)
