It’s bizarre but within the context of like the bizarre beefs within the ultra-orthodox community I get it. The ultra orthodox are already religious fundamentalists and these guys were nutty even for the ultra-orthodox. It just became big because it played into antisemitic tropes.

Weren’t they a part of a vaguely Messianic sect? Not like Jesus Messianic (only clarifying cause I think there’s a group that calls themselves Messianic Jews that are just Protestants who eat Kosher and do Jewish Sabbath) but thinking that their dead rabbi was the Messiah.

Yeah they were messianic yeshiva students. Apparently it was a whole thing about an ownership dispute over the synagogue with Chabad and an attempt to make the synagogue bigger?

It did happen and the Chabad organization acknowledged it basically as “this is a really bad thing some crazy yeshiva kids who we hate did” but it was overblown by antisemites as something beyond “religious nuts have drama and do wild shit”
