Learned that over half the population either don’t believe systemic racism is real or are unsure if it is real and personally I think it’s a shame. Those that deny it I believe are legit racist and those that are unsure are foolish

i took an american politics class where the professor showed us long term research on wealth accumulation and they found that white people who had a criminal record ended up with more than black people who never did anything wrong. literally undeniable proof that white peoples are allowed to make mistakes that others can’t recover from

Let’s not forget privilege predicts ignorance: “I’ve never experienced racism therefore it doesn’t exist” this is what happens when we built a system for white people. We have to address that now, or we’re going to end up with Chattel Slavery again

Does it take into account socioeconomic status? Because I’d be willing to bet the whites with criminal record probably had better material conditions, on account of the fact that slavery left a lot of black people with no inherited wealth

I’m not sure but tbh I don’t think that matters. Socioeconomic status shouldnt matter if skill sets are the same. A black person wothout a criminal record is less likely to get a job than a white person with a record. It reflects the idea that black people are inherently criminals even when they have no record of criminality.

Does it take skill sets into account? Because having generational wealth grants the opportunity to do things like go to universities or trade schools. The economic component is very important, and it can be considered as a more upstream cause of this particular divide without disregarding slavery and racism as the ultimate upstream cause

When doing the resume, they controlled for that. Even still though, black people often times have to be overqualified in order to get the same jobs as white people.

yes i do think that’s probably the mechanism but socioeconomic factors are a product of redlining and segregation etc so i would consider that a systemic cause in any case

Yeah absolutely I agree that it’s basically textbook systemic, I was just curious if the study is indicating that subjective interpersonal racism is as large of a factor as well

i don’t recall but i don’t think they thought interpersonal was a huge factor and it was probably too macro to tell
