It’s interesting how most people recognize “eugenics” as a bad concept but probably support it in some way (like fetal test for chromosomal disorders)

i feel like that’s more for when the genetic disorders cause fatal fetal abnormalities, but fuck anyone who does those tests just to terminate the pregnancy if there’s any chance of disability or disorders.

In a conservation ethics class we had a day which was basically talking about how eugenics is still a thing. It was weird because it was both like problematizing a lot of commonplace modern stuff by revealing it was eugenics but at the same time was showing that eugenics isn’t pure evil. Like genetic testing for diseases to help inform parents about whether they want to have kids is definitely eugenics. But it’s not evil.

It was very interesting but also uncomfortable to recontextualize eugenics beyond just like the evil racist stuff it rightfully has a terrible reputation for.

yeah like my brother and i have some kind of congenital deformity that caused use both to need major surgery as minors. i have a big scar on my chest from it and so does he, but it was a one-time medical necessity… when a child is being born into poverty and will also need lifelong medical care that comes with never-ending medical debt in this country, i can understand why one wouldn’t want to risk a lack of funds leading to their kid’s untimely demise… especially in this county.
