Yes, some random psycho does something terrible and your first instinct isn’t “oh my god this is an awful thing” but instead “aha another thing I can blame on those stupid dems.” Also I looked into the whole “72 prior arrests” thing, he actually was only convicted 15 times. Which, mind you, is still a lot, but it’s important to stick to the non-misleading facts. And besides, while this one attack was horrific, there is no evidence the city is a war zone, and one violent crime is not nearly-
You understand the opposing party isnt a monolith but if the person lit on fire—the hurt person that you made this post in reference to!—was a democrat then she “got exactly what she voted for”. It’s not that I don’t want to believe your claims, it’s that you’re wrong and it’s not like I’m the first one to point that out. You literally said you were just “going off what the news told you”
Also the guy definitely shouldn’t have been walking free but counting arrests instead of convictions is really, really stupid. Ted Bundy confessed to 30 murders, he has only been arrested 3 times. MLK Jr was arrested 30 times, and convicted 0 times. Which one of those people are more dangerous?
Because I didn’t know her, I’m gonna take the side of empathy and demanding justice. But let’s just say it comes out that she’s a dem then I’ll stop caring. Years ago there was a young woman murdered by an illegal in Iowa. I felt bad for her family until they endorsed lax immigration policies. Then I stopped because they voted for the policies that led to their own daughter’s death. I don’t have empathy for people whose own actions lead to their demise
Why is your empathy conditional on her political stance? I just feel like if you Actually cared about crime in Chicago, you’d be mad no matter who the crime happened to. So either Chicago is a hellhole and people need to be protected, or the people you don’t like in Chicago are getting hurt and Thats a good thing and it doesn’t matter
I’m not sure how you picked up that I’m angry by any means, I apologize if I gave that impression. It’s a genuine tragedy this happened, and wrong in every sense of the word. That doesn’t make your claims (that Chicago is a war zone, or that this is somehow the fault of democrats, or that the deployment of national guard forces is necessary) any more correct. Based on the facts, none of those things are true
I don’t think you were ever really having this conversation, you contributed very little of value to it tbh. You also still haven’t provided any proof or fact to back up your claim that this is the fault of democrats either, so I wouldn’t say I’m to blame if that were to happen to me. But you have a good rest of your day there bud
I have plenty to do friend, I’ve been up and going since five this morning running errands and shit. I have no doubt you have things to do as well, and I really couldn’t care less in all honesty. That’s why I said have a good rest of your day lmao. I’d consider that an ending to a conversation
The news is known for being sensationalist. It’s actually a pretty well researched phenomenon where it’s significantly less violent now than in the 90s but most people think it’s more violent, because news gives them a false perception. This is why looking at the statistics is important
And did you do anything other than talking to your friends and getting mad at this one (apparently incorrect) headline then complain about it? I’m not from Chicago, but that’s not a GOTCHA! I’m not the one making a shit ton of unsubstantiated claims then plugging my ears when I’m corrected, or having conditional empathy based on people’s political parties. If your friends were democrats, they’d deserve it according to you.
It’s not unsubstantiated just because you don’t want to believe it. Some of my friends are republicans and some are democrats. Even the democrats think that Illinois’ soft on crime policies have gone too far and the city is being overrun. Unlike you, I understand that the opposing party is not a monolith. So no, I don’t wish for this to happen to them
Believe it or not I’m capable of typing while doing other things! This whole time I’ve been grocery shopping, getting a new pair of skis, sending work emails, dropping off my dog at the groomer and picking her up (she looks adorable), sending work emails, and making a green bean casserole for tomorrow! I only said I had to stop replying because I was driving temporarily. Maybe you’re not capable of multitasking, but I am!
Oh dear. I was asking neutrally to clarify. But it seems that possibly you know you’re being hostile, so you assume everyone else is? I don’t think anyone was under the misapprehension that multitasking wasn’t possible? I’m baking a rose flavored cake to bring to dinner Thursday. I’m happy for you, truly! But multitasking is not unique to you, thankfully. The world would be in a rough place if it was, lol. 🤙
The laundry list of tasks you may or may not have completed, the very poorly faked cheery attitude paired with sarcastic insults, automatic interpretion of neutrally asked questions as hostile…it seems a little defensive and odd? I hope for the sake of those around you that this hostility is situational, I doubt it, but I still hope. All the best to you, man.
To be fair, op was right that the guy had been previously arrested 72 times, at least supposedly by media estimates. The guy was only actually convicted 15 times. The other 60 could’ve been any kind of false accusations or whatever, but he wasn’t convicted of anything outside the 15. Using 72 is still misleading in an attempt fear monger, but technically true
