I’m not a liberal I’m a socialist. It is up to my country to take care of needy people in other countries on a basic humanistic level, but also because our country fucked them up in the first place. America is why Guatemala, El Salvador, and Cuba have people desperately leaving the country. Just like how Britain is why Ireland was devastated in the 1870s.
Immigration can cause wages to go down. This is especially true with illegal immigrants. They are usually desperate, and the threat of deportation means they don’t want to rock the boat. Hence they are less likely to report labor abuses and are less likely to be unionized. This is why Cesar Chavez, a staunch advocate for labor rights of legal immigrants, was against illegal immigration. Illegal immigrants would be strikebreakers.
People will try to come. If you cut off legal immigration completely, then the illegal immigrants are even more desperate. Studies in Alabama have looked at the impact of increased immigration on communities who rely on chicken factories. Wages went down in the factories, due to immigrants being willing to work for less and not being unionized. But jobs increased outside of the chicken industry because of more local consumers.
So, how do you combat immigrants being willing to work for less? Well, the government can mandate and strictly enforce wage standards. You could have mandatory union membership within those industries. You can harshly punish companies who commit labor violations. And you can increase the quality of life in their home countries so immigrants are less desperate to come here (fewer illegal immigrants, likely fewer immigrants as a whole)
