Being atheist is being condescended by everyone. Not to whine about it, but man, “are you sure you don’t see or feel the magic?” Yes, I’m sure, not that I hate that you do, but I do not, will not, and am sure about my experience and feelings just as much as someone who feels it. The mystery of the universe is not perplexing enough to me to believe in gods or a higher power. The “higher power” is just natural laws, physics, mathematics, chemistry, and coincidence, and luck. Leave me be😭
Totally fair to be tired of people talking down to you about what you believe. But it's kind of ironic that a couple of replies here do the same thing in reverse. Not every religious person thinks one book explains all of physics, and plenty of traditions are built on questioning and arguing with the text. Respect goes both ways, that's all.
Eh I honestly think it’s a bit different. Or I should say I know you do get condescended to by Christians like agnostics do but I think the reasons are different. Atheism says that there is no god in a similar way that world religions claim that there is one, meanwhile agnosticism does neither, instead saying ‘we can’t prove there is or isn’t one’. As a scientist I think that’s the only reasonable perspective to have, I mean we know that we understand next to nothing about how the universe came
Into being and to claim that we know for sure there wasn’t some entity isn’t really something we can substantiate. I feel incredibly confident that there wasn’t a white guy in sandals who did it in 7 days but I can’t say there wasn’t some entity that kicked things off. In my experience atheists, with their total beliefs, have slightly more respect from religious folks because yall are absolutely sure of something, meanwhile agnostics are sure of being unsure, which gets misunderstood and shat on
