If big oil were smart and wanted to pull themselves up by their bootstraps they would've used all their connections to invest in nuclear and other forms of sustainable energy, while making safe, reliable, cheap alternatives to fossil fuel use (backup generators that don't run on gas, the entire consumer vehicle market, basically the entire electric grid). Instead they sat around with their thumbs in their asses like it's still 1950 and petroleum is innovative
