This honestly just looks like the photo was compressed lengthwise, probably just a formatting issue

It looks like they were adjusting for lens distortion, which had never been fixed in the original version. On a wide angle lens with a lengthwise photo like this, anything at the top and bottom of the frame will get super stretched out, and look distorted.
