I’m black and grew up in a predominantly white neighborhood, private schools, private universities. No one tells you you are less straight to your face, but you always get “you are so well spoken for a black girl” or “you are so pretty for a black girl” or the immediate assumptions of first generation uni student etc. Do you even know how that makes someone feel? As if black people cant be eloquent and beautiful and educated for generations by nature alone.

That’s not really an excuse though. Black women have some of the highest rates of college degrees, so even if I was well spoken doesn’t it statistically make sense? Plenty of people don’t interact with white people daily and no one says you are so pretty and well spoken for a white girl despite the fact that 35% of white adults in the US are functionally illiterate (compared to the 23% illiteracy rate of black adults)
