How are you thinking about that morally? What with google providing ai models for Israel to help in their genocide? Genuine question just curious

That’s a great question, and honestly I still struggle with it. The vast majority of Google’s deal with Israel goes nowhere near the work I do, which helps. I’ve been given representations that none of the work I’ve done has ever been involved in killing anyone, which also helps. If that changed, I’m honestly not sure what I’d do. I strongly believe the technology I work on will someday lead to a post-scarcity society and save more lives than I can imagine

Google also isn’t our only client, and a few months ago we did cut off a client because of a big and public ethics scandal. So I’m not sure if we’d continue to work for them if we knew our work was being used for war. At the same time, Google is very probably going to be one of our best chances at making a transformative difference, so I can’t confidently tell you we wouldn’t

Can I ask what company you work for? And how practically you see your work helping people? I’m familiar with the idea of a post scarcity society enabled by ai but it just seems like the capitalists at the reigns of these companies would never allow such a thing to happen, seems more likely that they’d use the tech to further wealth inequality and consolidate control

My work has already helped people to some extent. It’s improved cancer screening efficacy, helped in the search for new antibiotics, and it people use it to figure out day-to-day frustrations. In the long run, you’ve gotta remember that companies like Google are made of people like me. If we solved AGI, even if the execs wanted to keep a lid on it, we’d find a way to give it to everyone because that’s our debt to humanity. I owe it to you to build a better world
