If you don’t humanize him, then you are allowing people who are apathetic to him or like him to deify and those who hate him to turn him into a uniquely inhumane evil. He was a person and he did what he did. We are people and if we are not careful then we can do what he did. He is a cautionary tale and a warning about what humanity is capable of, he is NOT to mythologized. Do not let him be mythologized.

Most alternate histories include actual historical figures in wildly different situations. For example, Socialist Mussolini or Priest Stalin or French artists becoming radical political leaders (yes these are references to already existing media)
