This electoral swing was primarily driven by two forces: The Panic of 1893 and President Cleveland’s support for the Gold Standard which alienated many farmers. This caused many historically conservative counties to vote red for the first time in decades. It is, to this day, the largest single swing in any election, solidifying Republican control and flipping the chamber in a landslide.
