sports ARE political. it would be a much stronger statement to stand up against an administration that is perpetuating discrimination and injustice. atheletes who make political statements (kaepernick, rapinoe, liu) still love America, but it’s obvious that they’re calling attention to some of the flaws of our country; patriotism and nationalism are two different things
Especially with the phone call. It could have been uncomfortable laughter, you can even hear one of them say “2 for 2” in response to Trump, that’s as supportive as you can get. (I’m totally aware that I can be wrong I just don’t think it’s smart to make assumptions with what we have)
Ok and what if it was a manager or similarly positioned person that had control over the situation. Not only could they risk future placement in the Olympic team but their NHL career to. That’s not something everyone can afford to do especially if someone can torch their career to help appease Trump.
I bet a lot of them will go too still tho, but they’re mainly being used as props, visiting DC after winning gold is pretty common and an achievement many of these guys have dreamed of, it’s a shame that the pedo has to politicize it rather than invite everyone and simply celebrate American athletes being great
Ofc I understand why people politicize it our own president is politicizing it after all, but imo I think it should just be a celebration of our athletes performing well and doing something they haven’t done in almost 50 years, I’m a leftist and I was still piss drunk cheering for the MAGA dudes when they scored, that’s like okay it doesn’t make you a bad person or a hypocrite at all lol
No that’s not what I’m saying, I was saying that at first in response to them saying it shouldn’t be politicized. I just don’t understand why people are acting like they are completely innocent and could not do anything if they really wanted to an absolutely have to be completely complicit or at first acting like they weren’t maga
is there more they could have done? ofc that’s usually true ab literally anybody, but also they’re hockey players who take blows to head repeatedly and are notoriously conservative compared to athletes of other sports I think it’s more of a what did you expect type of situation, the predominantly rich white sport has people who actively support trump and others that prioritize respect over criticism, sounds about rich and white and not surprising whatsoever
yeah I bet there’s numerous people in there that voted for Harris too tho that didn’t speak up ab it, it is kind of a very difficult thing to do, criticize the president for an insensitive joke while celebrating your win is it the right thing to do? Yeah. It’s also socially awkward and could even lead to you being targeted on social media so All of these guys have press training and are taught to avoid controversy so it’s a bit of that as well
It’s not really jumping to conclusions to think “hmm partying with politicians/leaders who are doing horrible things and then getting on a call with the worst of them and laughing as he degrades your counterparts and just women in general and being proud enough to post these things… might make them bad people in support of bad people”
I feel like most people who actually dislike him have a spine against Trump. People consistently boo him, refuse to shake his hand, press him about issues even if he’s incredibly disrespectful to them (just listen to all the journalists women that he has been horrible to and how they still stand firm).
Charlie McAvoy didn’t speak up but imo it’s pretty clear this guy is also not MAGA or conservative lol, literally goes to the pride parade every year in Boston putting people in boxes based on their responses to the president of the U.S. calling them to celebrate an American win is silly even tho a lot of them likely are MAGA
