Israel actually really hates the Yiddish language, and the Yiddish-speaking communities who embrace their life as a diasporic people because the notion of fighting for freedom while remaining in the diaspora completely undermines the logic of Zionism.Oh yeah most people don’t realize how terribly Israel has treated the Yiddish language. It was part of a broader tearing between Zionists and assimilationists, who both viewed Yiddish as being a dirty dialect. For assimilationists, they sought to give up Yiddish in favor of the languages of their host countries. For Zionists, Yiddish was a part of diasporic culture that needed to be expunged in a new Hebrew state
Israel is like this bizarre history of every newly arriving Jewish group being treated like shit and then assimilating and passing it on to the next group. Yiddish-speaking immigrants in the 1920s were looked down upon by first Zionists who had adopted Hebrew. Then Holocaust survivors were treated like garbage and viewed as “weak” and having “not fought back.”
Then the waves of Mizrahi and Sephardic Jews expelled from Arab countries were shoved to the margins of society in desert camps, and viewed as being “too arab” and too religious. They were subject to police brutality which led to the creation of a group called the Israeli Black Panthers
Then after the fall of the Soviet Union, Russian Jews flooded in, and they were viewed by many Israelis as being imposter Jews (due to many being assimilated Russians), and they ended up forming insular ethnic neighborhoods. And in the last few decades you have Ethiopian Jews being subject to lots of racism and even forced sterilizations
But none of this really coalesced into any real opposition to injustice towards Palestinians. The poorer Mizrahi, Sephardic, and Russian Jews are the primary backers of Likud and the even more radical parties. It’s the more upper class, older Ashkenazi communities which are less radical and expansionist.
