Voter ID laws are ridiculous to implement in a country that doesn’t issue a national ID. And no, a social security number is not a substitute for a national photo ID. It’s shortsighted at best and voter suppression at worst. And in this case, it’s clearly voter suppression. Either issue national IDs to people free of charge or don’t implement voter ID laws.

If we need them so bad then they need to be provided at no cost on a citizen’s 18th birthday pair it with automatic voter registration.

I can see arguments for it, except that there has been basically no voter fraud with any substantial evidence besides a handful of cases. The right to vote is fundamental in any democracy and you should have a really good reason to put up any obstruction to voting. Maybe if there was wide spread voter fraud it would be justified, but even then I agree with people here about national id

The more barriers you put in place before something, the less likely a person is to do that thing, ESPECIALLY those who have very little time or energy to spare. The less obstacles we have to voting, the more likely people are to vote

I’m fine with voter ID laws, we already have it when we register and they need to match your signature.

I’m not fine with a completely new set of ID laws stacked on top of it that need a completely new set of credentials the govt has struggled to implement for 20 years for flying

Those newer IDs have fees, sometimes up to hundreds of dollars, and need a birth certificate. This will cause a massive backlog as millions of ppl request replacements
