Different reasons for different cases. The big one is that to #5’s point it’s a poll tax unless IDs are free, which they aren’t most places. There are people who just straight up don’t have the money to pay the fees for the ID app and documentation they need. Others have to work multiple jobs to survive and don’t have a day off to spend at the DMV. This disproportionately affects POC since they are unfortunately statistically more likely to experience this kind of financial crisis.
You also need a street address to apply for almost any ID, which homeless people of course don’t have. Homeless people without ID is currently kind of a crisis in and of itself but that’s another story. The address thing also causes problems for students living out of state and Americans living abroad
I’m actually experiencing the last one myself. My home state/state of residence requires a state ID/DL to vote, and I don’t have one because I live in Asia right now with no current US address even if I COULD apply for an ID, which would require traveling stateside, which is prohibitively expensive. Because of that I’m defacto banned from voting in federal elections even though I’m an eligible voter.
The fact is that voter fraud almost never happens since it’s too much work for so little payoff, and far more eligible voters than fraudulent ones are prevented from voting with these policies. If we had free and accessible IDs nationwide my opinion might be different, but we don’t.
