Of course they were. The moderator’s job was to present issues popular with the voters (talking points) and see what the candidates had to say. Listening to the debate, I feel like Stevens never fully addressed that contentious group’s have given money to help her campaign nor did she justify her acceptance. On the other hand, Al-sayed acknowledged some of his problematic actions (podcast stuff and statements) and explained them.

Stevens also felt less confident than Al-Sayed. She kept using the same language and ideas even when they didn’t relate to the question at hand. For example, she kept saying “and I have the receipts to prove it” and would use every opportunity to mention how many political endorsements she has. I felt like that weakened her argument by making her seem like a one trick pony with only a few reasons to justify her position.

I’m no Michigander so I can’t claim to speak for their experience. Both candidates address how energy companies are contributing to higher costs of living through high electricity prices. I believe DTE was one that came up. I feel like both candidates addressed what they would do to resolve it, but Stevens’ inability to justify why she accepted DTE financial aid makes it hard to take her ideas seriously.

She not currently accepting money from dte. Some money from dte rolled over form her last campaign. Ig you can say that’s hypocritical still but she’s not actively receiving money from a company she’s being critical of.

That may be true (I haven’t checked I just watched the debate) but it still raises the potential for a conflict of interest. Compare that to Al-Sayed who hasn’t taken corporate donations, and it doesn’t paint Stevens in the best light. Her acceptance of AIPAC money (I don’t really care but I know it’s important to many people) also brings into question if she has the best interests of the US at heart. Al-Sayed brought this up a lot too, and I didn’t feel like Stevens gave an effective rebuttal.

Of course Al-Sayed has his own funding issues. He dodged the moderator’s question about his podcast by basically saying “it’s not important, let’s get back on track”. But, while that left me unsatisfied, I feel like Stevens had the worse of the two responses regarding campaign finances.

I’m guessing his podcast money would have way less regulation and oversight than campaign funding but I get what you mean.

I mean that’s all these things are, they’re just political talking points going back and forth. They were both repeating things that’s just what political debates are now unfortunately.

Yeah I think I mentioned it above but that’s one of the big things I didn’t like about his response. He was asked a question and should have answered it directly. Instead he skirted the issue
