No it absolutely can be. There’s people who hate Israel just because it’s Jewish and not because of the genocide. And there’s people who opposed it because of Israel’s actions and then resorted to antisemitism. For example, Iran once hosted a Holocaust denial conference and invited KKK leader David Duke.

You can oppose the genocide Israel is committing and also think that someone calling for a different genocide is bad. A real genocide is worse than hypothetical genocide but that doesn’t make calling for hypothetical genocide fine.

Being anti-Zionist just means being against Zionism. There is no determiner as to whether that’s because someone doesn’t want a Jewish state just because they hate Jewish people, or if they oppose it for religious reasons (like many Heredi Jews), or they oppose ethnostates as a concept, or they only care about Israel because Muslims are the victims (like Turkey).

Additionally particularly in the Muslim world, anti-Zionism has become tied to antisemitism. The expulsion of the Mizrahi Jews from the Middle East was largely because Muslims blamed their local Jewish communities for what Israel was doing.

I think on the Internet the word Zionist has sort of changed in context. A lot of people use it as meaning “agrees with the most aggressive expansionist actions of Israel” whereas others use it more to refer to the historical definition which just means supporting the existence of a Jewish state in the Levant.

Yeah you’re absolutely correct and that’s on me for using it in less official context. The problem I run into with that distinction is how Netanyahu has been very open and transparent about pushing that “new” definition of Zionism. Every state has the right to exist but not more of a right than its neighbors

Yeah and me personally I don’t think any state should be officially “for” a single ethnicity, because even if it attempts to be democratic, people not of that ethnicity will usually experience discrimination. So I don’t like Zionism mainly because I think the ethnonationalist aspect of it would inevitably oppress local non-Jews.

I totally understand why Jewish people in the late 1800s and early 1900s would think that forming their own state is the only way they would be safe, but that doesn’t change the harm that was done to Palestinians.

It’s kind of why I like the political division of the Americas more than Europe. Our countries exist more as political entities than as separate ethnic nation-states. Of course then people still try to invent a new ethnic identity based on those arbitrary political borders and get racist about it anyways…

Well that’s why i’m struggling with the state of our country so much. We have the capacity to have so much culture, collaboration, etc. and we have an administration that is fighting to limit our nationalities and religions
