Banning plastic straws and using those stupid paper ones to save the turtles is the equivalent of paying a dollar more on gas to save the Middle East

yeah, we need to produce less straws, much like we need to lessen our dependence on fossil fuels

idk i think there’s an opportunity for innovation there. got a cup that didn’t use a plastic lid and folded instead and i got genuinely excited because not only did it use less plastic, it solved a bunch of other problems too. i think the same manufacturer is making more durable paper straws too (including bendy ones) that don’t get soggy for quite a while

In NJ they banned plastic bags years ago. Plastic consumption in the years that followed increased by approximately 6x since customers would buy the heavy reusable Walmart bags every time they went to the store rather than reusing them. They’re still illegal in NJ (along with plastic straws generally) and I don’t think our state’s plastic consumption has changed materially.

I’m not even arguing that banning plastic straws doesn’t make a dent in plastic pollution, you’re right on that. I just don’t mind the paper straws. I never got the hate. Maybe I just drink stuff fast.

Just letting you know that the firm who did that study is funded by disposable plastic bag manufacturers. Not saying it’s wrong, per se, but I’d take it with a grain of salt because they have a motivation to lie.

Ah thanks for letting me know. I’m also personally biased because I use plastic bags to clean my cats litter boxes so it’s pretty inconvenient not to get them when I go shopping now.
