It’s a bit hypocritical since Iran wanted to do the exact same thing and the US said no way Jose.

It’s international waters. If the U.S. sets the precedent for this, why can’t China also charge a toll on transiting the Taiwan strait? Why can’t Malaysia charge for the straight of Malacca? Why can’t Russia charge a “protection fee” for the Arctic?
