Yes. Texas tried to ban drag shows. Several states banned gender affirming therapy for young adults (over 18s). Idaho tried to criminalize using the “wrong” bathroom. Jail time penalty.

The original justification for the enslavement of Africans and native Americans was that they were non-Christians. The justifications then shifted to the Curse of Ham, an Old Testament section which was likely originally to justify to the enslavement of Canaanites. It was then re-interpreted as biblical justification for the enslavement of black people.

The curse of ham was used for centuries to justify racial enslavement and discrimination. It has declined in usage today, but it is why Mormons banned black people from being priests until the 1970s, and is still perpetuated by fundamentalist Mormon sects

If the Bible just had no passages endorsing slavery then there wouldn’t be anything to pull from. You said few if any religions had it. Then you said “oh no they’re just offshoots.” The modern use of the curse of ham primarily comes from the Catholic Church. The largest Protestant denomination in our country, the Southern Baptists, were founded in support of slavery. That’s not minor offshoots. It is reduced today but it used to be very common.

“Modern use” by the Catholic Church IE the use of the curse of ham from the 1500s to the late 1800s, as opposed to the medieval use of it. Not saying that the Catholic Church today endorses it.

Many would argue that the homophobia and transphobia of modern Christian churches is also justifying heinous actions by pulling at the straws of religious texts. I take a neutral view. I do not seek to whitewash the harmful aspects of religion.

That’s just not true. The whole point of pulling at straws is to take something that mentions a topic and twisting it into something unrecognizable but able to be rationalized through manipulation. Also, any heinous acts committed on the basis of sexual orientation or identity would not be a blemish on a religion which does not say or notion to do so, that’s just the fault of the people. Anyone can take and twist, and everything can be taken and twisted.

If the religion’s holy texts endorse slavery, that is a problem with that religion. Modern people didn’t put those passages in there.
