It’s an income test - if colleges can’t demonstrate that a program has a positive return on the investment it costs to attend the school, the government doesn’t want to fund loans that they’ll have to pay when the borrower defaults. It’s to help students avoid studying an area that has demonstrated income data that shows they won’t be able to repay the loans based on income after college. Private loans are still an option, but this is to prevent borrowers from getting sucked into bad debt.

It’s going to lead to way more debt if people have to use predatory private loans for their degrees. Smaller schools are going to suffer more too bc an equivalent degree from a local community college isn’t going to have the same outlook as the degree from a place like Yale or smn

That’s true, but taxpayers shouldn’t be on the hook for student loan debt. Especially when data shows that income earned in a certain profession won’t exceed the cost to receive the education. If someone wants to study something that has demonstrated value, the loan will be guaranteed by the government. If not, why should taxpayers eat the loss? Why would someone want a large loan for an education that has data showing earnings in that field won’t be enough to repay the loan?

Can you all please stop making assumptions that every person you talk to on this app is a crazy war hawk republican? I’m a fiscally responsible independent. Our defense budget is wayyy too bloated. I want to see a balanced budget. Instead of assuming what someone believes next time, you can just ask them you know.

I don’t think a “balanced budget” is a partisan issue. Im sure the vast majority of citizens don’t want us spiraling into debt. But, regardless of which party takes power, they just continue to increase the deficit. So any party claiming to be about fiscal responsibility is lying.

Yeah hence me identifying as an independent in my comment above. I don’t think any party cares about fiscal responsibility anymore, which has the possibility to absolutely ruin our country in the next couple of decades. It’s very important to me that our borrowing, spending and tax collection procedures allow the US to continue existing and there needs to be a big change soon.

There you go making assumptions again. I promise you I’m not a Republican. My most important issue is fixing this country’s financial situation. Other than that, my views are all over the spectrum. Normally I’d discuss them with you but it’s clear to be you’re just interested in name calling and scoring an internet “own” and not actually having a discussion. Bummer, this could’ve been fun.

You don’t know anything about me besides the fact that I think the amount of debt this country is in is bad. So I’m not interested in your misguided opinion.
