Looking into Israel it's quite funny that they're demographically fucked in a few decades because of the ultra orthodox (who don't pay tax or serve in the military) population boom

I saw someone say “it’s like if the Amish voted”

I honestly hope the contention around this divide in their society escalates. Not only is it apartheid but there’s some castes that have special privileges among the rest

One of the only reasons the Israeli government was fine with the orthodox exemption to mandatory military service was because they knew if they let them do nothing but reproduce for decades on end they would quickly out-populate the native Palestinians, Israel is an apartheid ethnostate

They do pay taxes, but they consume more than they produce. They tend to be pretty poor, not work much, and have a ton of kids

The Amish just do their own thing for the most part, 40% of ultra orthodox don't work because they're studying the Torah

they actually granted the exemption assuming they would remain a tiny minority, thus making it not really an issue, but they did not

I’m sure not a single person foresaw the potential consequences for allowing a religious fundamentalist group that follows a teaching explicitly saying to reproduce as much as physically possible to do nothing but reproduce as much as physically possible

Whatever you want it to mean, I’d imagine forced conscription or brutal crackdowns that lead to armed ultra orthodox insurgency and civil war. And yes I am wishing for violence and no I’m not going to feel guilty about it

universal conscription is a major policy promise of most of the parties elected this time

literally netanyahu only clawed his way back to power last time because he promised the haredim he’d undo the supreme court ruling striking down the exemption

and if u think about it i think u can figure out why a civil war is not a very likely outcome here

here’s an overview of the history, i don’t think anyone knows exactly but the number was “several hundred” and it was only supposed to be people who were actually doing full time religious study as a gesture of respect to ultra orthodox. but now the community just exempts everyone whether they’re studying or not
