It’s almost like tariffs were always an incredibly stupid idea this whole time

I took a class on the economics of international trade in spring of 25. My professor was so excited about us getting the opportunity to see the stuff we were learning play out in the real world, even though it of course has negative consequences. I also remember sitting in his office and looking at how they calculated the “reciprocal tariffs” Trump announced on liberation day; we came to the conclusion that they just made shit up.

100% agree. My entire issue is that it took until ~January this year for it to finally show in the data. Anything mildly concerning was getting shrugged off by markets & institutions, and now it’s becoming increasingly harder to ignore

i was done my intermediate macro and international econ classes by the time he ran again, but those professors both hated him and loved to use his first term policies as case studies. it’s the fact that you can point out exactly how the stimulus checks (3/5 happened under Trump) led to the inflation that he repeatedly bashed Biden for. Textbook long-run responses to monetary policy.

The long term consequences are going to be much more disastrous then the short term effects. Not only have we essentially nuked our economy, but our relationship with other trading powers is now in the toilet. Like this is going to take years, if not decades to restore our standing in the trading world to what it was

They did—he based his whole tariff plan on this book by Peter Navarro who made up and cited a fake expert (“Ron Vara” which is just an anagram of his last name)
