If you are afraid to show photo ID, you should not be able to vote. I don't need anyone pretending to be me or any other registered voter.

If a photo ID is not free to obtain, it should not be needed to vote. Your identity is verified when you register and sign your ballot. It is unconstitutional to put voting behind a paywall

You do realize quietly enacting voter ID without the bare minimum mass awareness campaign is just going to lead to disenfranchisement right?

So maybe we should make IDs free instead? A real ID is also like $20 in most states. It isn't really that much money. Many states also have low-income offers for cheap ID or free.

That idea was criticized by civil libertarians and others on the grounds that free IDs for everyone would be a slippery slope towards mandatory national ID (that you would need to carry at all times). Remember that Real IDs were proposed at the same time as the Patriot Act, CIA black sites, and whatnot were being heavily utilized in the War on Terror.
