I’m not a parent yet so maybe I just “don’t get it” but can we think of any other scenario where it’d be legally acceptable to hit someone who poses absolutely no threat to you

Not if they don’t hurt the kid. I know when I was a kid if I got spanked I learned my lesson and I was scared to make the same mistake

i don’t think it’s something that needs to be legislated but it’s not ideal

These kids nowadays with gentle parenting are getting away with anything and everything. And the disrespect is so real. Bring back spanking.

Only with two-party consent, like wiretapping

yeah i think that’s the thing. i got spanked for wasting a telemarketer’s time by pretending i was my 39y/o mother even tho i was fuckin 7 lmao. i was told that i almost signed them up for something (even tho i didn’t have a damn credit card or any financial info to close the deal lmfao) like why was i made to be scared of telemarketers after that?? it was dumb but like didn’t warrant physical violence. sure thats just me but worse stuff happens to others, lets be honest!

like, i’m sorry. if you think beating a child is somehow beneficial to their development, you should not have children!

My mom would swat my hand so hard that I cried.

Not even if the child was reaching for something dangerous?

You can come up with hypotheticals all you want lol, yeah you might smack the hand away or just grab it but we aren’t talking about that, this is about punishment in context

you don’t swat at them when they reach for something dangerous, you put your body between them & the dangerous thing. block their reach with your hand, arm, leg, torso, knee, or whatever is closest or most logical. knife set? arm to restrain. hot pan? palm to deflect their reach, where back of your hand is facing hot pan to avoid palmside burns. lots of ways to do better when you have proactive thought!

Yeah, I mean I can think of maybe twice that it actually happened to me and it didn’t exactly hurt.

fear ≠ understanding, and does not teach you how to understand right from wrong as an adult. just like you said, it only makes you scared to make the SAME mistake, not how to understand why the mistake is wrong and how to avoid making SIMILAR mistakes

its more likely neglectful parenting and not gentle parenting. how do you propose spanking, a form of hurtfulness and a cause of fear, teaches gratefulness and kindness? and whether or not you can find a reason, why cant one be gentle when teaching these important skills, as to avoid the scientifically proven negative long-term outcomes that corporal punishment causes?

i think some of it could be people confusing “legal” for “illegal”
