In the mid-1990s, the U.S. declassified the Venona cables (Soviet messages revealing post–World War Two espionage in America) showing that most of the prominent figures accused of spying during the Cold War really were spies. I’ll be the first to say that McCarthy took it too far, but it wasn’t just baseless moral panic like many think.
