I think Krampus is more associated with the demon that opposed st Nicholas in the stories, whereas Santa is a more modern creation using Scandinavian gnome/germanic elf folklore

But Sintaklaas, the Dutch version, is notably an interpretation of St. Nicholas, similar to the English Father Christmas It’s really just the American Santa (which has become global now) that was originally distinct from Nicholas. It’s part of the reason Santa has elves, he was originally their size in the stories
