Can someone that isn’t ChatGPT explain to me why we don’t have pro environment/anti immigrant and pro fossil fuel/ pro immigrant parties in the U.S. Not that I want either but

im and environmental scientist and my take is caring about the environment requires considering the whole world to be within your sphere of obligation— not just the area within your country’s/state’s borders. it involves making decisions that may not directly benefit your region in the interest of the whole world, knowing that having a better world will eventually help your region. that same worldview probably predisposes people to care about immigrants

The USA is broadly divided into two large umbrella parties, who take a stance on a broad range of issues. There is not room for complex ideological combinations in small individual parties.

and the opposite would be true too. people who don’t feel like they have a responsibility to the wider world probably aren’t motivated to make decisions in the interest of immigrants or the environment, especially if it doesn’t directly benefit them

also bc the US is so massive geographically. in smaller countries anti-immigrant people can blame immigrants for environmental degradation because both are experienced more directly by the people
