I still have no idea what your political beliefs are

You mean you have no idea what my political label is.

Idgaf if you call urself a donkey, elephant, rhino or unicorn. I wanna know ur beliefs and where they tend to spread on the spectrum. Like Hitler called himself a socialist. I wouldn’t say his policies were in line with the ideals of socialism. I’d go as far to say he was the opposite. Maybe even… lemons 🍋

Pretty strongly pro-western, not a fan of ideological tribalism, skeptical of revolutionary politics, I care more about empirics than ideology, and I’m not a fan of populist politics despite empathizing with people who more or less fall through the cracks of systems and bureaucracies. Unless you want more specific policy positions 🤷‍♂️

Dope. I’m curious as to what you consider as being pro western or otherwise. Other than that I agree mostly. Tribalism sucks, labels are good generalizations to the right minds but bad for general people. Empirics are good but that falls into the sunk cost fallacy too much on its own. Empirics with strong innovative and social experientation is ideal to me. Seal the cracks and refurbish the system.

I believe the Western world has produced some of humanity’s most successful political, scientific, economic, and civil institutions, and criticisms of the West should be comparative rather than treating it as uniquely evil. Granted, the Western world is all I live in and know so Islamic, Confucian, Dharmic, and Eurasian politics probably have good practices, I’m just not as well read on them from policy standpoints.

I see these institutions as an inevitability in human has opposed to the result of a specific group. Like without the mongols rising across Asia, it very well could have been Baghdad that started a “renaissance” and continued scientific revolution, and Egypt would have likely been a contender for early industrialization. Capitalism was a direct result of globalization. If the Islamic world invested heavily into making trade cheaper they would have done it, instead they maintained the status quo

… maintaining old profits until Europe bypassed them and made things cheaper with scale. Like dgmw bc I grew up in the west there are certain western cultural values I have more than others but like u said more likely bc of my background than bc it genuinely is better. Things like individual identity vs communal identity, scientific basis of nature vs spiritual connection, things like that

For broader foreign policy stuff, in theory, I am an interventionist, but over the past 60 or so years, I don’t know if I can justify larger American intervention without saying it needs to more or less go back to drawing board and figure out what exactly we’re setting out to do.

Yeah it’d be nice if “policing the world” meant actually upholding human rights instead of defending your rich allies. Although given the state of American law enforcement, the title does fit reality.

For instance, I don’t even think most leftists are against intervention if it’s for a just cause. To keep it simple just for the sake of argument, I think if the United States wasn’t allied with Israel, I think a majority of leftists would 100% want the United States to intervene on the Palestinians behalf for the sake of morality and I honestly don’t think that’s an incoherent position to have.

I don’t get why we abandoned UN intervention like we had for Kosovo and Cyprus and all that. It wasn’t ideal yeah but better than just letting that shit happen

That’s probably where I earn the “shitlib” or “neolib” title from most lefty types on here. One of the most foundational literature/journalistic pieces for my world view is The Afghanistan Papers from The Washington Post. If you haven’t read them, I implore you to do so. Also, read anything on the Marshall Plan and the SCAP Reforms. Nation-building is no easy thing and I wish more Americans understood the sheer scale and complexity of it.

I’m honestly not even against sitting down and having a conversation on socialism, historical materialism, e.g.. My issue, which it’s really not an uncommon one anymore, is that like 99% of leftists fucking suck shit. To be frank, most people in politics suck shit because the death of expertise means anyone and everyone gets to have an invested opinion on topics that are so vast and complex yet get reduced and boiled down to the short form content TikTok slop videos or TwitLonger essay.

It’s why I tend to be a prick to a lot of people on here 😐 It seems like I carry myself like “I know more than you”, but in reality it’s more of a legitimate skepticism or down right cynicism towards everyone because no one can seem to articulate a coherent position or explain why they believe what they do other than saying “because it’s the right thing to do and muh empathy and compassion”
