hot take. the environmental impact of AI with regards to water use is completely overblown like yeah AI sucks but that’s more how it’s being used and the economy being propped up by the bubble than anything else

Yeah but people read one article that misquoted a study and now they think every ChatGPT query uses a bottle of water 💀

And the fact that any time a data center gets made, people who live near them see their electricity bills increase significantly

eh. that’s also more a result of how AI is being used. like if you make everything run AI as much as possible and try to expand your investments into it as much as possible obviously you’ll need more energy for it if that didn’t happen energy usage would not be a concern. it’s not like people cared (that much) about datacenter energy use prior to ai

its just kinda becoming a major industry and industries use energy and it’s naturally a bit energy hungry, sure, but not to like an insane degree in comparison. nobody’s going after the Hall Heroult process for aluminum for chewing up energy cause it goes somewhere useful, you get aluminum out of it

The average data center seems to have a similar energy mix to the average US household tbh. The thing is that the companies building data centers have the money to invest in cleaner sources of energy that most residential electric companies may not choose (although idk whether they have much incentive to, with the current tax credits)

For households that’s just electricity btw. If you factor in oil, natural gas, or propane used for cooking and heating, then it’s worse than a data center

The backlash should really be towards the local government tbh. That’s usually the one that gave the power company a monopoly, but there’s usually some increased regulatory power in exchange for that monopoly
