Because they adhere to a meritocratic worldview that tells them that white people being advantaged is a result purely of hard work and not a biased system unfairly advantaging them. It feels good to view the world as being inherently just. If you suddenly think a billionaire doesn’t deserve where he is, that feels unjust and bad. And it feels even worse to realize you didn’t earn your own place in the world.

No it's not. We can debate the causes, but systemic biases in things like income, incarceration rates, and educational attainment are observed statistics.
