Australias ban on social media for people under 16 is great, should be replicated everywhere else, and extended to 18. i dont want children on social media

I feel like it’s a bit of an overreach, but there is merit to no one being on it. Then there’s no fomo. My aunt has an agreement with all her daughter’s friends that they’re not giving their kids phones until high school and I think that’s not a bad idea

It’s pointless when the ban doesn’t cover Roblox or discord :) kids will just use vpns and get around it. Now it’s just harder to monitor and forces them to more harmful websites that don’t uphold the ban. And if anything bad happens, they’re less likely to report out of fear of getting in trouble for getting around the ban

Sure, but how are they actually enforcing this without it being a major infringement on privacy?

I don't know if you know but it's the implementation of the policy, not the policy itself. 100% government overreach and will end poorly for the citizens. The most prominent site weren't even banned (discord). The discussion shouldn't be about the content, but about the implementation. Requiring IDs for everyone. This will impact free speech and data privacy. No one will be safe to use any online platform because their ID will be leaked from these platforms from data breaches.

I like the motive. The problem is enforcement. What we should do is teach kids better ways to be on social media.

So there was a specifically designed kids social media app, Ziggazoo. Don’t know if it’s still around, don’t want to know. But I remember seeing this and instantly thinking “wow that seems wildly awful and prime for exploiting” So yes I feel the same about keeping kids off SM.

For the love of god, get kids playing outside and playing in dirt. Good for the mind, good for the immune system. And they will be less likely to become doomers.

Yeahhhh this reminds me of when Australia demanded a backdoor for encryption and the tech companies were like “yeahhhh that’s not possible” and the mf PM said “while the laws of mathematics are very commendable, the only laws that apply in the laws of Australia are the laws of Australia” lmfao

Like this just doesn’t work. What we need is child centered online spaces where heavily monitoring would be acceptable and expected. Just like irl. Internet was a much better place when club penguin, webkins, miniclip, etc was around.

Yeah solid take right here. Heard Roblox is full of predators and self harm cultists and whatnot now? Just heard something recently about increasing extremism on there which sucks, that seemed like a relatively good space for kids back in the day

Webkinz is still around I think. Club penguin was the goat

Roblox to discord pipeline is a running joke of the failure of Roblox’s ability to protect children on their site. CP, grooming, and trafficking galore. And idk if it was ever really all that safe, people were having hella Roblox sex in my youth

People were straight up sexting in the public Roblox chat on roleplay based games like Roblox city/neighborhood life/highschool life/etc

But just like role playing with text right? Cause I remember seeing that but it never seemed all that crazy to me

Since we’re on the topic there was this one game we played in the computer lab at school that was basically the more books you read or activities or puzzles or whatever was on the app you could buy furniture and stuff for this treehouse thing? I wish I remembered what that was called. Pre abc mouse era was lit

Someone needs to write an article on the threats Roblox opens kids up to (sexting/grooming/talking to creeps) if their moderation is going to suck that badly. See what the shareholders do once that news breaks

Also like 13 states are suing Roblox so that’s fun. And apparently the Feds? Idk hasn’t been updated on that

Oh 💀 watch the Feds drop their lawsuit (I assume it’s related to children)

Ah it wasn’t the federal government it was just a bunch state governments and a federal lawsuit over an 11 year old girl was allowed to be targeted by a predator on Roblox

Christ 😭 they’re not even supposed to be collecting data from kids under 13 unless it’s limited to very few attributes

Allowed is probably the incorrect term legally as that’s the allegation, but yeah. It’s fucked. Australia is just just slapping a really shitty bandaid over a massive oozing cannonball sized wound

America already has one for under 13 but it’s hard to enforce and results in nothing happening besides maybe a single account ban. I think flip phones could be good/necessary, but definitely no iPhone until high school for my future kids
